ServiceNow Applications, menus & modules
Organise your application and create custom tables in Global.
By Nayeem · ServiceNow Architect and Certified Technical Architect
Understand the concept
An application groups related functionality. An application menu organises navigation, while modules open lists or other destinations. A custom table stores a record type. Application scope affects configuration ownership and interaction with other applications.
A practical business example
Build a small training-request register, then provide a menu and module so a learning administrator can open its records.
What you will learn
- Create an application menu and module
- Create a custom table
- Understand table extension and Global scope
Step-by-step practice
Use a personal learning instance and suitable permissions. Record your starting configuration before changing it.
- In a learning instance, confirm the intended application scope before configuring anything.
- Create a small practice table with fields for the training request. Decide whether a standalone table is sufficient.
- Create an application menu and a module that opens the table’s list.
- Create a sample record and test navigation with the intended role. Document the table’s technical name.
Common mistakes and troubleshooting
A visible menu is not a replacement for table access controls. Table creation and extension may have licensing implications outside a learning instance.
Should every custom table extend Task?
No. Extend Task only when task behaviour fits the requirement. A standalone reference-data table may not need task fields or lifecycle behaviour.
