ServiceNow Forms & views

Understand the form experience and organise fields for users.

By Nayeem · ServiceNow Architect and Certified Technical Architect

Understand the concept

A form shows a record’s fields, sections and related information. A view provides an alternative layout for a use case. Related lists show connected records. Removing a field from a view is a presentation change and does not by itself restrict access to that field’s data.

A practical business example

A service desk needs a compact incident form, while a specialist needs more technical fields. Separate views can support these experiences.

What you will learn

  • Identify form sections and fields
  • Configure a form layout
  • Compare different views

Step-by-step practice

Use a personal learning instance and suitable permissions. Record your starting configuration before changing it.

  1. Choose a practice table and note the current form view.
  2. With suitable configuration permissions, create or select a practice view.
  3. Arrange useful fields into sections and add an appropriate related list.
  4. Switch views and confirm that layout differs while the underlying record remains the same.

Common mistakes and troubleshooting

If a field is missing, check the view, UI policies and permissions. Hiding a field on a form must not be used as a substitute for access controls.

Does a form view secure sensitive data?

No. Access-control rules govern data access. Views primarily organise the presentation.
