ServiceNow Table Relationships & Inheritance

Learn how reference fields connect records, explore one-to-many and many-to-many relationships, and understand table inheritance.

Understand the concept

A reference field links a record to another table. One user can be the caller on many incidents, creating a one-to-many relationship. A many-to-many relationship typically uses a connecting table. Table inheritance lets a child table reuse fields from a parent; it is different from a reference relationship.

A practical business example

Incident extends Task and inherits common task fields. An incident’s Caller refers to a user. User-group membership connects many users to many groups.

Step-by-step practice

Use a personal learning instance and suitable permissions. Record your starting configuration before changing it.

1. Open an incident and follow its Caller reference to the user.
2. Find other incidents for the same caller to demonstrate one-to-many records.
3. Inspect a user’s group memberships and identify the connecting membership records.
4. Inspect the Incident table definition and its Task parent. Compare inherited and incident-specific fields.

Common mistakes and troubleshooting

Do not extend a table solely to connect records. Choose inheritance when the new record is a specialised type of its parent, considering the behaviour it will inherit.

Is Caller an example of table inheritance?

No. Caller is a reference to a user record. Incident extending Task is inheritance.
