ServiceNow Request management

Follow a request through approvals and fulfilment.

By Nayeem · ServiceNow Architect and Certified Technical Architect

Understand the concept

A request (REQ) groups an order, a requested item (RITM) represents an individual catalog item, and a catalog task (SCTASK) represents a fulfilment activity. One request can contain several requested items, and an item can require several tasks. A record producer creates a record in its configured target table.

A practical business example

An employee orders a laptop and software together. The order has a request, each offering has its own requested item, and teams may receive separate fulfilment tasks.

What you will learn

  • Distinguish REQ, RITM, and SCTASK
  • Understand record producers and order guides
  • Explore approvals and fulfilment

Step-by-step practice

Use a personal learning instance and suitable permissions. Record your starting configuration before changing it.

  1. Submit a practice catalog item with configured fulfilment in your learning instance.
  2. Find the request and open its related requested items.
  3. Inspect the tasks and approvals created for the item, where configured.
  4. Trace their relationships and compare this outcome with a simple record producer’s target record.

Common mistakes and troubleshooting

Submitting an item does not guarantee tasks or approvals unless fulfilment has been configured. Closing a task and completing the requested item are not automatically identical actions in every implementation.

Does a record producer always create a RITM?

No. It creates a record in its configured target table. Standard catalog items use the request-management structure.
